Tips To Build Your 'She Shed'

Saturday, August 15, 2015

In our last segment, I kicked off an orientation on exclusive spaces that ladies can call their own. These so called 'she sheds' have become all the rage, so in this second of two reports on the subject, we'll dig into how to outfit one of these functional and often beautifully decorated out buildings just for you!

According to Rebecca Shinners at House Beautiful (housebeautiful.com), you can go from assembly or occupancy to hosting your new she shed warming party in just a few easy steps. The following are Shinners' easy guidelines to make it happen:

1. Clean out your old backyard shed—or use a kit to build a new one. Don't be afraid to give your shed a few personal whimsical structural details, if you're inclined.

2. Give your shed a fresh coat of paint. Shinners says paint your new shed a calming color like light blue, or a shade of purple or light yellow, to instantly give it new life.

3. Define the purpose of your shed. Shinners says the point of a she shed is to have a quiet space that allows you to embrace a hobby that's important to you.

4. Search flea markets and antique shops for unique finds. Decorating a she shed isn't about spending lots of money — it's about creating a space that feels relaxed and cozy. So Shinner recommends you look to flea markets and antique shops for unexpected finds.

5. Surround yourself with nature. Shinners says placing your shed in a secluded spot and surrounding it with grassy plants, vines, and window boxes full of flowers helps create a tranquil vibe.

6. Create an inviting entryway. She sheds should have an inviting look, especially if you're hoping to entertain friends there, Shinners says.
